A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition set out to investigate the impact of the quantity and variety of fruit and vegetable intake on the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD).

During the study, they examined the dietary habits of 71141 women and 42135 men between 1984-2008, using a validated questionnaire updated every four years.

During the follow up analysis, a total of 5189 CHD cases were documented.

The results showed that a higher consumption of citrus fruit, green leafy vegetables, and β-carotene– and vitamin C–rich fruit and vegetables was associated with a lower CHD risk.

Regardless of their other dietary habits, the upper quintile of fruit and vegetables consumers had a  17% lower chance of developing CHD.

On the contrary, the variety of fruits and vegetables consumed did not form any relationship with CHD risk.

The data from the study concludes that the quantity of fruit and vegetable intake, rather than variety, significantly lowers the risk of developing CHD.
